Research continues to offer us new perspectives on the connection between music and healing. In this program, we'll hear music as a response to, and a triumph over, illness. Schubert's Fantasy for Violin and Piano was one of his late works, composed during a time of ailing health. The imaginative richness and explorative nature of the work represents an escape from the composer's confinement during his treatment.
Similarly, Claude Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano was the composers' last significant work, written and performed during a time of great personal loss. Here, a dazzling, luminous range of ideas and characters is compressed into a succinct three-movement structure, which Debussy described as being "full of tumultuous joy." These two works will be paired with Avner Dorman's sparkling Memory Games and Hannah Lash's darkly expressive Adjoining, which Francesca commissioned in 2015.
